During pregnancy or the first year postpartum, 20%-30% of birthing people and 10% of non-gestational partners experience depression, anxiety or other mental health changes. Many new parents feel guilt or shame, irritability and anger. Some people might also have difficulty bonding with their baby, racing thoughts, feelings of panic, intrusive thoughts or possible thoughts of self harm.
These mental health changes are higher for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities because of cultural oppression and extreme stress in our current world. These can impact both the birthing and non-birthing parent. In my experience, having open dialogue can make these mood changes less daunting and provide space to work through them.
