During pregnancy or the first year postpartum, 20% of mothers and 10% of fathers experience depression, anxiety or other mental health changes. PMADs can also feel like guilt or shame, irritability and anger. New parents might also have difficulty bonding with their baby, sleep or appetite disturbances, racing thoughts, feelings of panic, intrusive thoughts or possible thoughts of self harm.
PMADs are higher for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities and can happen for both the birthing and non-birthing parent. In my experience, having open dialogue to discuss PMADs can make them less daunting and provide space to work through them. In our confidential sessions, clients are met with understanding and guidance to support their resiliency.
